Your Medicare enrollment windows

Your Initial Enrollment Period is seven months long. It starts three months before the month you turn 65, includes your birthday month, and runs three months after. Miss it, and you may pay a penalty for the rest of your life.

Already on Medicare? The Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 to December 7 every year. You can join, switch, or drop a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan. New coverage starts January 1.

If you are in a Medicare Advantage plan, you also get a second chance from January 1 to March 31. You can switch plans or return to Original Medicare. Life events like moving or losing employer coverage can open a special window too.

The four pieces of Medicare

Original Medicare is Parts A and B: hospital and medical coverage from the federal government. Medicare Advantage (Part C) is a private plan that bundles A and B, often adds drug coverage, and may include dental, vision, and hearing.

Medicare Supplement, also called Medigap, is a private plan that helps pay what Original Medicare leaves behind: copays, coinsurance, and deductibles. Part D is prescription drug coverage, also sold by private insurers.

What to check before you choose

Check your doctors first. Many Bluffton residents see providers in Hilton Head, Beaufort, or Savannah. Confirm each one accepts the plan you are considering.

Then check your prescriptions. Make sure each drug is on the plan's formulary and see what tier it falls in. Look past the monthly premium to the deductible, the copays, and the yearly out-of-pocket maximum. Plans are offered by county and ZIP code, so your options depend on where you live.
