About Bluffton

Bluffton is a town on the bluff above the May River, in southern Beaufort County between Hilton Head Island and Interstate 95. Plantation owners began building summer homes here in the early 1800s for the high ground and river breezes. The name was chosen in the 1830s and the town was incorporated in 1852. In 1844 the Bluffton Movement, a protest against federal tariffs, started here at the Secession Oak. Union troops burned about two-thirds of the town in 1863. Bluffton is now one of the fastest-growing towns in the state: its 2020 Census count of 27,716 was more than double 2010's 12,530. Old Town Bluffton is a National Historic District.

Local food and events

Bluffton Oyster Company, opened in 1899 on the May River, is described as South Carolina's last full-time oyster shucking business. The Bluffton Village Festival, known as Mayfest, has run every spring since 1978, and the Historic Bluffton Arts & Seafood Festival is in the fall.
