Beaufort County sits at the southern tip of South Carolina's coast, a landscape of salt marsh, tidal rivers and barrier islands between Charleston and Savannah. Its county seat, Beaufort, was founded in 1711 and is the second-oldest city in South Carolina after Charleston. Spanish, French and English settlers all tried to establish footholds around Port Royal Sound long before that, and Parris Island has trained U.S. Marines since 1915.
The county is also central to Gullah Geechee history. The Penn Center on St. Helena Island opened in 1862 as one of the first schools for formerly enslaved people, and today it anchors the Reconstruction Era National Historical Park.
This is Lowcountry cooking country: shrimp and grits, fresh local oysters, and Frogmore stew (a Lowcountry boil of shrimp, sausage, corn and potatoes, named for a community on St. Helena Island). Gullah dishes like red rice and okra stew are worth seeking out too.
Beaufort County has one of the oldest populations in the state: more than 50,000 residents are 65 or older, many of them retirees who moved here from out of state. If you moved here with a Medicare plan from another state, you may need to change it. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are approved county by county, and moving out of a plan's service area gives you a special enrollment period to pick a new one.
The main hospitals people use are Beaufort Memorial in Beaufort and Hilton Head Hospital, and many residents also see specialists in Savannah or Charleston. Before choosing a plan, check that your doctors and hospitals are in its network, including any out-of-county specialists. Abilla Advisors can sit down with you in person anywhere in Beaufort County, or help by phone at 843-284-6815.
