About Port Royal

Port Royal is a small town on Port Royal Island, just south of Beaufort, with 14,220 residents at the 2020 Census. French explorer Jean Ribault named Port Royal Sound in 1562 and built the short-lived Charlesfort on nearby Parris Island. The town was incorporated in 1874, and its historic center, the Old Village, has north-south streets named for European capitals such as Paris, London, Madrid and Edinburgh.

  • Walk or bike the Spanish Moss Trail, a rail trail of roughly 15 miles linking Port Royal with Beaufort
  • Stroll Paris Avenue in the Old Village, which hosts street music events through the year
  • Visit the Camp Saxton Site and Fort Frederick Heritage Preserve, both on the National Register of Historic Places
  • See the Port Royal dock area, where the hurricane scene in the 1994 film Forrest Gump was filmed

Seafood is the star here. The town holds a soft shell crab festival in late April and a community oyster roast in late October, and Beaufort Charities hosts its oyster roast at Live Oaks Park each March.
