Hilton Head Island is a barrier island with 12 miles of Atlantic beachfront, incorporated as a town in 1983. The island is named for Captain William Hilton, who identified a headland near Port Royal Sound in 1663. It had 37,661 year-round residents at the 2020 Census, a median age of 59.3 and about 39.6 percent of residents 65 or older. Summer visitors can push the population toward 150,000. Charles Fraser began developing Sea Pines in 1956, the year the first bridge connected the island to the mainland, and that planned-community approach still shapes the island today.
Native Americans lived on the island for thousands of years, and the Sea Pines shell ring, about 150 feet across, is roughly 4,000 years old. Union forces took Fort Walker in November 1861. Hundreds of freed people then settled on the island, and the Civil War-era community of Mitchelville was built on the north end to house them.
This is one of the oldest communities in the state, and many residents moved here from out of state. If your Medicare Advantage or Part D plan came from another state, a change of address can open a special enrollment period, because those plans are approved county by county. Hilton Head Hospital is on the island, and many residents also use hospitals in Savannah, so check whether your plan covers out-of-area care. Abilla Advisors can compare Beaufort County plans against your doctors and prescriptions at no cost to you. Call 843-284-6815.
