Seven BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Medicare plans are ending or shrinking their service areas for 2027, affecting more than 19,000 members.
Most of the change is a drug plan ending statewide. The rest is Medicare Advantage plans leaving counties, including Beaufort and Charleston.
BlueCross Rx Value (PDP) is a statewide stand-alone Part D plan. It ends on December 31, 2026, and it accounts for most of the affected members. If you have it, you need a new Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage by December 7 to avoid a gap in prescription coverage.
Several BlueCross Total (PPO) plans are leaving counties. One leaves Beaufort and Charleston. Another leaves Calhoun, Chesterfield, Florence, and Orangeburg, and another leaves Anderson and Cherokee. BlueCross Total Value plans are leaving Anderson and Calhoun, and a small Blue Basic plan is also leaving Anderson and Calhoun.
You will get a letter from the plan. You are not losing Medicare, only this plan. You can choose a new plan during Annual Enrollment, and people whose plan is ending also get a special enrollment period.
Check your doctors, your prescriptions, your yearly out-of-pocket maximum, and extra benefits like dental, vision, and hearing. A plan with a $0 premium can still cost you more at the pharmacy or the dentist.
