Sun City Hilton Head
Sun City Hilton Head is built around an active lifestyle. Here is how Medicare plans handle fitness and wellness benefits, and what to verify first.
Pools, trails, pickleball and golf make Sun City an active place. Here is what Medicare covers, what some plans add, and what to verify first.
According to the community's official site, Sun City Hilton Head has four fitness centers, eight pools (three indoor and five outdoor), three dog parks, 7.5 miles of trails and three golf courses with 54 holes. It also lists more than 100 chartered clubs, and 32 common-area buildings.
Original Medicare does not include a general gym membership. It does cover an Annual Wellness Visit at no cost under Part B, and it covers physical therapy when it is medically necessary and ordered for you. Many Sun City residents stay active on their own, and Medicare is there for the medical side.
Some Medicare Advantage plans include a fitness program or allowance, and some add wellness extras. Which gyms participate, and whether a benefit applies to a specific facility, depends on the plan.
| Item | Original Medicare | Some Medicare Advantage plans |
|---|---|---|
| Gym membership | Not covered | Some plans offer a fitness program or allowance |
| Annual Wellness Visit | Covered under Part B at no cost | Covered, as plans must cover what Original Medicare covers |
| Physical therapy | Covered when medically necessary | Covered, with plan-specific copays and networks |
