About Charleston County

Charleston County is the historic heart of South Carolina's coast. English colonists founded Charles Towne in 1670, and the city moved to its current peninsula between the Ashley and Cooper rivers about a decade later. The first shots of the Civil War were fired at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor in April 1861. Today the county stretches from the beaches of Isle of Palms and Folly Beach to the farms of Johns and Wadmalaw islands and the fishing village of McClellanville.

Things to do

  • Walk the historic district, the Battery and the Charleston City Market
  • Take the ferry out to Fort Sumter National Monument
  • See the Angel Oak on Johns Island, one of the oldest live oaks in the region
  • Visit the Patriots Point naval museum in Mount Pleasant

Local food

Charleston is one of the South's great food cities. Try she-crab soup, shrimp and grits, Lowcountry boil, and Gullah Geechee dishes like red rice, with fresh shrimp and oysters straight from local docks.

Medicare in Charleston County

Charleston County is home to more than 70,000 residents age 65 and older, and some of the state's largest health systems, including MUSC, Roper St. Francis and Trident. That's good news for choice, but it also means networks vary a lot from plan to plan. A plan that includes one health system may leave out another, so it's important to check that your specific doctors and hospitals are covered before you enroll.

We'll compare the plans we offer in your ZIP code against your doctors and prescriptions at no cost to you, by phone or in person.
