Sullivan's Island is a small barrier island at the mouth of Charleston Harbor, with 1,891 residents at the 2020 Census. It is named for Captain Florence O'Sullivan, a lookout stationed here in the late 1600s. From 1700 to 1775 it was a quarantine station where enslaved Africans were checked for disease before sale in Charleston, and a memorial bench dedicated in 2008 honors them. On June 28, 1776, South Carolinian forces under Colonel William Moultrie turned back a British fleet at Fort Sullivan, later renamed Fort Moultrie, and the Moultrie flag became the basis of the state flag. Edgar Allan Poe was stationed at Fort Moultrie in 1827 and 1828, and set his 1843 story The Gold-Bug here.
Sullivan's Island is tiny and has no hospital, so care is across the Ben Sawyer Bridge in Mount Pleasant or in Charleston. Many residents are long-time owners who have retired here. Check that your doctors and your preferred hospitals are in network, and ask how your plan handles emergencies and refills if a hurricane forces an evacuation. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are approved county by county. Abilla Advisors can compare Charleston County options at no cost to you. Call 843-284-6815.
