Seabrook Island is a private residential island southwest of Charleston, with 2,050 residents at the 2020 Census. It is named for settler Robert Seabrook. William Seabrook of Edisto Island bought it in 1816 and grew cotton there, and a group of sportsmen formed the Kiawato Club on the island in 1917. The Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina ran a summer camp for underprivileged children on the island from 1939, and developers bought about 1,100 acres from the diocese in 1970 and planned the community that exists today. The Town of Seabrook Island was incorporated in 1987.
Seabrook Island is a gated community with a large retiree population, and hospital care means a drive into Charleston. If you spend part of the year elsewhere, a Medicare Supplement works with any provider nationwide that accepts Medicare, while Medicare Advantage networks are local. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are approved county by county, and Abilla Advisors can compare Charleston County options against your doctors and prescriptions at no cost to you.
