About Charleston

Charleston was founded by the English in 1670 as Charles Town, named for King Charles II, and moved to its present site in 1680. It was chartered as a city in 1783, became a major port and a center of the Atlantic slave trade, and had 150,227 residents at the 2020 Census. Its historic peninsula, with Rainbow Row, The Battery and White Point Garden, is one of the best-preserved colonial cities in the country.

Things to do

  • Take a boat to Fort Sumter National Monument
  • Walk The Battery, Rainbow Row and the City Market
  • Visit the Charleston Museum, the Gibbes Museum of Art and the International African American Museum
  • Catch the Spoleto Festival USA and Piccolo Spoleto each spring, or run or walk the Cooper River Bridge Run

Local food

Charleston cooking means shrimp and grits, she-crab soup, fried oysters, Frogmore stew and red rice, built on Gullah Geechee staples like Carolina Gold rice, okra and benne seeds. The Lowcountry Oyster Festival is a good time to try the local oysters.

Healthcare close to home

Charleston is the region's medical hub, with the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), Roper Hospital, Bon Secours-St Francis Xavier Hospital and the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center.

Medicare in Charleston

With MUSC and several large hospital systems here, networks matter: the hospital and specialists you want may be in one plan's network and not another's. Veterans can combine VA care with Medicare, and those who want a wider choice of doctors often compare a Medicare Supplement with a Medicare Advantage plan. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are approved county by county. Abilla Advisors can compare Charleston County options against your doctors and prescriptions at no cost to you. Call 843-284-6815.
