About North Charleston

North Charleston was incorporated on June 12, 1972 and is now the third-largest city in South Carolina, with 114,852 residents at the 2020 Census. Its roots are in the Charleston Naval Shipyard, established in 1901, and the Park Circle area planned in 1912. The base closed in 1996, and in 2010 the Air Force Base and Naval Weapons Station merged into Joint Base Charleston. Boeing chose the city for its 787 Dreamliner assembly line in 2009, and the Hugh K. Leatherman Terminal opened its first phase in 2021.
