Isle of Palms is a barrier island northeast of Charleston with 4,347 residents at the 2020 Census. It was once called Hunting Island or Long Island, and J.S. Lawrence bought it and renamed it Isle of Palms in 1899. A trolley once ran to the island and James Sottile built a beach pavilion and amusement park in 1912. Access by car came with the Grace Memorial Bridge in 1929. The Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley left from Breach Inlet, between Isle of Palms and Sullivan's Island. In the 1960s divers found several blockade runners off the island, and the finds led to South Carolina's Underwater Antiquities Act. The city incorporated in 1957.
Isle of Palms has no hospital, so care means a drive over the connector to Mount Pleasant or Charleston. Check that East Cooper Regional Medical Center and the Charleston hospitals you might use are in network. If a hurricane threatens, Part D plans must allow early refills once an emergency is declared. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are approved county by county, and Abilla Advisors can compare Charleston County options against your doctors and prescriptions at no cost to you.
