About McCormick County

McCormick County is one of South Carolina's smallest counties by population, in the western Lakelands along Lake Thurmond. The town of McCormick is the county seat and is named for Cyrus McCormick, who once owned gold mining interests in the area. Other communities include Plum Branch, Willington and Mount Carmel. Willington was settled by French Huguenots. The county has an older population: about 3,700 residents, roughly 38 percent, are age 65 or older. Small-town churches, mostly Baptist and Methodist, are the center of community life.
