About Hampton County

Hampton County is a rural Lowcountry county of farms, timberland and small towns along the Salkehatchie and Savannah River swamps. It was carved out of Beaufort County in 1878 and named for Wade Hampton III, who had just become governor. Hampton, the county seat, grew up around the courthouse built that same year, and towns like Varnville, Brunson, Estill and Yemassee grew along the railroads that crossed the county.

Agriculture and forestry still drive the local economy, with farmers growing corn, soybeans and wheat alongside large stands of pine.

Things to do

  • Come for the Hampton County Watermelon Festival each summer. It started in 1939 and is South Carolina's oldest continuous festival
  • Fish, hike or camp at Lake Warren State Park
  • Visit the Hampton Museum and Visitors' Center in town
  • Explore the wildlife management areas and hunting lands the county is known for

Local food

Expect classic small-town Southern cooking: barbecue, fried chicken, catfish, vegetables from local farms and, of course, watermelon in summer.

Medicare in Hampton County

Hampton County is home to about 3,500 residents age 65 and older. Hampton Regional Medical Center in Varnville is the local hospital, and many residents travel to Beaufort, Savannah, Charleston or Orangeburg for specialist care. That makes provider networks especially important here: a plan that looks inexpensive can cost you more if your specialists are out of network or you need to travel to see them.

Some Medicare Advantage plans include benefits that help in rural areas, such as transportation to medical appointments, over-the-counter allowances and dental coverage. We'll compare the plans we offer in your ZIP code against your doctors and prescriptions, and we're happy to meet you in Hampton County.
