Clarendon County is a rural county along the shores of Lake Marion in central South Carolina. Its seat is Manning. The county is also an important place in American civil rights history: in 1950 Black parents in Summerton filed Briggs v. Elliott, one of the school desegregation cases combined into the Supreme Court's 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision. Liberty Hill AME Church in Summerton was a key meeting place for that movement, and the Briggs v. Elliott historical park honors the plaintiffs.
Lake Marion catfish and bream, barbecue, chicken bog and church-supper vegetable plates are staples here.
About 7,600 Clarendon County residents are 65 or older, nearly 1 in 4 people, one of the higher shares in the state. McLeod Health Clarendon in Manning is the local hospital, and many residents also use providers in Sumter, Columbia and Charleston. The county is a federally designated primary care shortage area, so confirm that the doctors you rely on are in network and consider transportation benefits that some Medicare Advantage plans offer.
