About Cherokee County

Cherokee County sits in the northern Upstate on the North Carolina line. Gaffney, the county seat, is best known for the Peachoid, a giant peach-shaped water tower beside Interstate 85 built in 1981, and Limestone University, founded in 1845. The county also holds two Revolutionary War sites: Cowpens National Battlefield, where Patriot forces won a key victory in January 1781, and Kings Mountain National Military Park near Blacksburg, where Patriots defeated Loyalists in October 1780.

Things to do

  • Photograph the Peachoid and browse roadside peach stands in summer
  • Walk the trails at Cowpens National Battlefield
  • Visit Kings Mountain National Military Park and its battlefield trail
  • Explore downtown Gaffney and Limestone University's historic campus

Local food

This is peach country, so look for fresh peaches, peach ice cream and cobbler in season, along with Upstate barbecue, boiled peanuts and Southern vegetable plates.

Medicare in Cherokee County

About 9,600 Cherokee County residents are 65 or older, around 1 in 6 people. Cherokee Medical Center in Gaffney is the local hospital, and many residents also use Spartanburg and Greenville systems, or providers across the line in Gastonia and Charlotte. Because those systems sit in different networks, and some are in North Carolina, check that a plan covers the doctors and hospitals you actually use. The county is a federally designated primary care shortage area, which makes it worth confirming local clinic coverage too.

Abilla Advisors can compare the plans we offer in your ZIP code against your doctors and prescriptions at no cost to you. Call 843-284-6815.
