About Bamberg County

Bamberg County is a rural county in the Lowcountry-Midlands border region, with the Edisto River running through its southern edge. It was formed in 1897, and its two best-known towns are Bamberg, the county seat, and Denmark. Denmark is home to Voorhees University, a historically Black college founded in 1897 by Elizabeth Evelyn Wright, and to Denmark Technical College. Both institutions are central to the town's identity and economy.

Things to do

  • Walk the historic downtown streets of Bamberg and Denmark
  • Visit the Voorhees University campus and its historic buildings
  • Paddle or fish the Edisto River, one of the longest free-flowing blackwater rivers in North America
  • Join local festivals and church and community suppers through the year

Local food

Look for classic small-town Southern food: barbecue, fried chicken and fish, collards, butter beans and homemade pies and cakes.

Medicare in Bamberg County

About 3,100 Bamberg County residents are 65 or older, nearly 1 in 4 people. The MUSC Health Bamberg-Barnwell Medical Pavilion in Denmark is the closest local facility, and many residents travel to Orangeburg, Columbia or Charleston for specialists and hospital care. The county is a federally designated primary care shortage area, so it is worth checking whether a plan covers the providers you actually use and how far you will need to travel. Some Medicare Advantage plans include transportation and extra benefits that can help.

Abilla Advisors can compare the plans we offer in your ZIP code against your doctors and prescriptions at no cost to you. Call 843-284-6815.
