Allendale County is one of South Carolina's smallest counties by population, lying along the Savannah River on the Georgia border. It was formed in 1919, and its largest communities are Allendale, the county seat, and Fairfax. Farming, timber and hunting shape much of the landscape, and part of the federal Savannah River Site extends into the northern end of the county.
Local cooking is classic rural Lowcountry-Midlands Southern: barbecue, fried fish, collard greens, field peas and cornbread, along with fresh produce from area farms.
Allendale County has about 1,700 residents age 65 and older, roughly 1 in 5 residents. Allendale County Hospital in Fairfax serves the county, and many residents travel to Savannah, Augusta, Beaufort or Charleston for specialists. The county is a federally designated primary care shortage area, so provider networks and travel distance matter more here than in a big city. A plan that looks inexpensive can end up costing more if your specialists are out of network, so check your doctors first. Medicare Advantage plans may include transportation, over-the-counter and dental benefits that help rural households.
