About Abbeville County

Abbeville County lies in western South Carolina along the Savannah River lakes and the Sumter National Forest. The county was formed in 1785, and its seat, the town of Abbeville, is known for a historic Court Square anchored by the Abbeville Opera House, built in 1908. The town also has a place in Civil War history: a secession meeting was held here in November 1860, and Jefferson Davis met with his officers at the Burt-Stark Mansion in May 1865.

Things to do

  • Walk the Court Square and see a show at the restored Abbeville Opera House
  • Tour the Burt-Stark Mansion and the historic downtown
  • Fish, boat or hike around the Savannah River lakes and the Long Cane area of the Sumter National Forest
  • Visit Due West, home of Erskine College and Theological Seminary

Local food

Expect Southern comfort cooking around the square: barbecue, fried chicken, catfish, fresh vegetables and homemade desserts, plus boiled peanuts, South Carolina's official snack.

Medicare in Abbeville County

About 5,500 Abbeville County residents are 65 or older, roughly 1 in 4 people here. Abbeville Area Medical Center is the local hospital, and many residents also see doctors in Greenwood or Anderson. The county is a federally designated primary care shortage area, so it pays to confirm that your doctors, local clinics and pharmacies are in a plan's network before you enroll. Some Medicare Advantage plans add benefits that matter in rural areas, such as transportation to appointments and over-the-counter allowances.
