Travelers Rest grew up on the wagon road that the South Carolina General Assembly paid $2,000 to build in 1794 from Greenville north into the Blue Ridge toward Asheville and East Tennessee. The road was fully completed in the mid-1850s and carried heavy wagon traffic. The city was incorporated in 1959, and Furman University's campus was annexed into city limits in 2018. It had 7,788 residents at the 2020 Census.
