Surfside Beach is a small beach town on the Grand Strand, nicknamed The Family Beach, with 4,155 residents at the 2020 Census and a median age of 57.5. The land was once a plantation, and the area was called Roach's Beach and then Floral Beach in the early 1900s before it became Surfside Beach in 1952. A pier was built in 1953, but Hurricane Hazel destroyed it and most of the beach's roughly 70 houses in 1954. The town was incorporated in 1964. In 2007 it was the first place in Horry County to adopt a smoking ban in public places, and in 2022 it placed markers and memorials for the enslaved people buried in the Ark cemetery.
Surfside Beach is a small town with an older population, and many residents use doctors and hospitals in Myrtle Beach, about 10 miles up the beach. Check that your primary care doctor and Grand Strand Medical Center are in network if those are your choices. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are approved county by county. Abilla Advisors can compare Horry County options against your doctors and prescriptions at no cost to you. Call 843-284-6815.
