Summerville, the "Flower Town in the Pines," had 50,915 residents in the 2020 census, mostly in Dorchester County with small parts in Berkeley and Charleston counties. It began as Pineland Village in 1785, when Charleston-area planters settled here to escape seasonal insects and swamp fever. In 1847 it passed what may have been the nation's first law against cutting down trees.
The Flowertown Festival, started in 1972, is South Carolina's largest arts and crafts festival, with about 200 artists and roughly 200,000 visitors over three days around the end of March.
Summerville Medical Center and several MUSC campuses serve the area.
